  1. This fall I became the Director of a new centre at 
  2. the University of Toronto for the study of the 
  3. extensions of man. All our culture and technology 
  4. are immediate extensions of our own bodies and 
  5. senses and nervous systems. But each extension 
  6. has quite distinct psychic and social 
  7. consequences. We hope to study them all. I began 
  8. with the study of the extension of the sense of 
  9. sight via Gutenberg technology in a book called  
  10. The Gutenberg Galaxy  (University of Toronto 
  11. Press, 1962). Some indication of its drift you can 
  12. gather from the enclosed leader in the Times  
  13. Literary Supplement , which I wrote recently.
